For over a decade, cryptocurrency mining has relied on the legacy Stratum V1 protocol. While functional, Stratum V1 centralized block template construction in the hands of a dozen pool coordinators worldwide. Individual miners contributed brute-force SHA-256 computation but had zero say over which transactions entered the block.

Why Legacy Stratum V1 Poses Systemic Risk

Under Stratum V1, the pool operator compiles the candidate block from their local mempool, computes the Merkle root, and distributes header work to connected miners. This architecture creates three significant vulnerabilities:

  • Transaction Censorship: A pool coordinator under regulatory coercion can selectively exclude specific transactions, addresses, or smart contracts from block templates.
  • Bandwidth Overhead & Security: Stratum V1 transmits unencrypted human-readable JSON-RPC payloads, leaving miners vulnerable to Man-in-the-Middle (MitM) share hijacking and excessive cellular data telemetry costs at remote sites.
  • Template Monoculture: Network decentralization metrics suffer when 90% of global hashrate is guided by the block construction choices of five entities.

The Architectural Pillars of Stratum V2

Stratum V2 represents a complete re-engineering of the communication layer between miners, proxies, and pool infrastructure:

1. Binary Framing and Cryptographic Noise Protocol

By replacing plaintext JSON with an encrypted, binary framing protocol, Stratum V2 slashes telemetry bandwidth consumption by up to 50% while preventing ISP-level share tampering or snooping.

2. The Job Negotiation Protocol (JNP)

This is the crowning achievement for miner sovereignty. With JNP enabled, an individual farm operator runs their own validated node, builds custom block templates containing the transactions they choose, and negotiates with the pool to validate their shares against that custom template while still participating in collective pool payout distribution.

3. Native Stratum Proxying

Stratum V2 includes built-in multiplexing proxies, allowing massive facilities with thousands of ASICs to maintain a single encrypted connection to the upstream pool, dramatically lowering CPU load on edge network switches.
